Hurrah for new beginnings!

So today was the second day of my new job! First day was very brain cramming and slightly mind boggling. I felt a bit like Fran from Black Books where she gets a new job and she's really not sure what her role is, but today I actually felt as though I contributed to the team a little! I learned a bit of stuff, organised a bit of stuff, researched a bit of stuff, filed a bit of stuff and 'flagged for follow up' a bit of stuff. My favourite part of the day however, was the bit just after 3pm, when a dude in shorts and a T rocked up to the office (quite a sight, they're rather corporate there!). The two other girls in my cubicle turned to me and said "Come and have a stretch!". Stretch we did. The entire Communications, Media and Chief Executive Staff all got out of their seats and did a series of stretching exercises!!! It was AWESOME! I felt suitably stretched and raring to go once again (considering 15 minutes earlier I had been a fraction of a second away from falling asleep!).

My non-work-related highlight of the day was the purchase of my funky AND functional kombi handbag! Another kombi is added to the collection, perhaps one day, I'll have a real one!!!!

Last Day as a Receptionist

Today is a sad day....for my customers anyway! Today will be the last time that I grace the front counter of my organisation. The last day that I have to ask permission for a toilet break. The last day that I have to arrange a lunch break early in the morning when I don't quite know what time I'll be hungry. The last time I'll have to answer the phone to people wanting instant answers to questions that take time to research!
Am I going to miss it? No, not really. Some of our customers are lovely, and those I will miss. Others, well 'cantankerous' comes to mind. I actually had a customer come up to me yesterday, having overheard me telling someone I was leaving and said he would miss my friendly, helpful service! I was floored! I thought I was a grumpy cow!
Farewell front counter. It's been swell, but the swelling's gone down now!

Short weeks always go forever!

Why is it so? Monday is a public holiday. We go to work on Tuesday and spend all day thinking it's Monday and then on Wednesday thinking that it's Tuesday. We get to Thursday and we've got it together by then. We know it's late night shopping in the suburbs and that tomorrow is Friday.
I dunno about the rest of you, but I find myself getting to the end of a 'short week' thinking to myself "Gee's it's been a long week!" Maybe I overdo it on my long weekends, making me more tired and irate during the weeks, but given the fact that I am Nanna and usually spend my weekends doing things like cross stitch, ironing, baking or housework, that is unlikely.
Interestingly enough, I find the weeks where I work Sundays (not anymore!!!) I find Friday arrives sooner than I expect it. Taking this fact into account, I have decided I know the answer. It is reverse psychology. At the beginning of a short week, I think "Short week! Friday's gonna be here before I know it!!!" I expect it to be an easy week, but given that there is often a backlog of work from not being here on the Monday, the week drags.
I expect that my 6 day weeks will drag, but this simple expectation of a dragging week seems to fast track the days, bringing Friday closer than I first thought! The moral of the story....expect every week to drag and maybe they'll go faster.

I think this post clearly illustrates my need to have a new start, tackle a new challenge and get a freaking life. Sorry to waste your time reading this dribble!!!!

Message to all Chefs, Cooks etc

Orange peel is not a food. It is simply a protective layer, placed around the edible part of the fruit. It tastes hideous, has a nasty texture and potentially is covered with pesticides!

I ate a muffin this morning and the maker of said muffin was too lazy to peel the orange....now I have a horrible orangey taste in my mouth. Boo Hoo!

Ok, a little more about Darwin

We did heaps in Darwin and without my little travel journal by my side right now, it is difficult to say what we did and when, but a few highlights were;
  • Hiring pushbikes and riding along the esplanade to East Point
  • Hiring a car and driving to Litchfield Park for a refreshing swim in Florence Falls
  • Going to Berry Springs for yet another refreshing swim!
  • Doing a Jumping Crocodile Cruise on the Adelaide River (although the boat driver was a complete tool)
  • Visiting the friendly animals at the Territory Wildlife Park
  • Lunch at Casuarina on Sunday after a short, sharp and shiny service at my old church
  • Catching up with old friends
  • Staying at a fancy hotel in the city centre
  • Getting *engaged* on the 13th floor of said hotel, while looking at a beautiful sunset, sipping champagne and eating strawberries (most certainly the main highlight of the trip)
  • Going on a sunset harbour cruise on our last night (only slightly marred by some sea sickness!)

So yes, needless to say, a truly unforgettable holiday!!!
